About the disease & condition

Chicken pox, also known as varicella, is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It primarily affects children but can occur at any age and may be more severe in adults. The illness is characterized by fever and an itchy skin rash that progresses through different stages before crusting over. Early diagnosis and appropriate care help reduce discomfort and prevent complications.

Known symptoms

Fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite
Headache and general body discomfort
Red, itchy fluid-filled blisters (vesicles) that later crust over
Rash typically starting on the face and chest, then spreading to the limbs

Known causes

Infection with the varicella-zoster virus (VZV)
Close contact with an infected person through respiratory droplets or direct contact with blisters
Lack of prior vaccination or immunity

Care

Clinical examination by a healthcare professional
Blood tests for varicella antibodies in selected cases
Symptomatic treatment including antihistamines for itching and fever reducers
Keeping the skin clean and nails trimmed to prevent secondary infection
Antiviral medications in high-risk or severe cases
