Surfactant Therapy
About the Procedure
Surfactant therapy is a specialized treatment given to premature newborns whose lungs are not fully developed. Surfactant is a natural substance that helps keep the air sacs in the lungs open, making breathing easier. In premature infants with Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS), artificial surfactant is administered directly into the lungs to improve oxygen exchange and reduce breathing effort. This treatment significantly improves survival rates and supports smoother respiratory transition in the early days of life.
