Reconstructive Surgery
About the disease & condition
Known Symptoms
- Physical signs: Tissue loss, deformity, or asymmetry.
Restricted range of motion (e.g., due to scar contractures).
Exposed structures (bone, nerves, vessels). - Functional deficits: Difficulty eating/speaking (e.g., post-oral cancer surgery). Impaired limb function or sensation.
- Psychosocial impact: Reduced quality of life, self-esteem issues.
Known Causes
Congenital anomalies such as cleft lip/palate, craniofacial syndromes, and hand deformities (e.g. syndactyly).
- Acquired defects: Trauma (e.g., fractures, soft tissue loss, burns). Oncologic resection (e.g., mastectomy, head and neck cancer excision). Infection (e.g., necrotizing fasciitis requiring debridement).
- Functional impairments:
Scar contractures limiting movement. Nerve injuries requiring repair or grafting.
Care
- Prevention: Meticulous surgical planning and technique.
Optimization of patient factors (nutrition, smoking cessation). - Follow-up:
- Short-term: Monitoring for vascular compromise, wound healing, and infection.
- Long-term: Functional assessments (e.g., range of motion, sensation).
- Revisions: Additional procedures may be needed for refinements.
- Psychosocial support: Counseling for body image adjustment.
Note: Reconstructive surgery prioritizes function but also addresses aesthetics. Advances like perforator flaps and nerve allografts have improved outcomes. Patient education and realistic expectations are crucial for success.
Relevant Specialties

Plastic Surgery
Our Department of Plastic, Reconstructive & Microvascular Surgery offers comprehensive care for both functional and cosmetic needs, handling routine aesthetic procedures as well as complex reconstructions that other centres may refer to. Our surgeons are trained in microvascular “free tissue transfer” for head and neck reconstruction. We treat congenital differences, trauma and burns, cancer-related defects, hand conditions and complex vascular problems, and provide a full suite of cosmetic options from rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery to liposuction and non-surgical skin treatments. Supported by a craniofacial unit, dedicated burn services, lymphedema care and specialist operating theatres, the team works closely with oncologists, ENT, maxillofacial and rehabilitation specialists to plan each case.

Aviation Medicine
Our Department of Aviation Medicine, also known as flight medicine or aerospace medicine, is a specialised form of preventive or occupational medicine that focuses on the health of patients/subjects who are pilots, aircrews, or astronauts. We offer a comprehensive range of services, including Initial Class I Aeromedical Examinations, Direct Reinstatements for Flying Crews, Class III Aeromedical Examinations, and Fitness-To-Work Assessments.

Cardiology
Our Cardiology Department delivers prevention, diagnosis and treatment for heart diseases through personalised care and advanced technology. Risk clinics for blood pressure and lipids offer non-invasive testing (ECG, echocardiogram, treadmill stress test, Holter monitor, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring) and provide interventional services in a modern Catheterisation Laboratory, including device therapy and structural procedures. We maintain 24/7 cardiac ICU coverage and consultant availability to ensure rapid treatment for acute events. Post-procedure, patients receive tailored rehabilitation and multidisciplinary support that spans diabetes, pulmonary, and genetic services.

Critical Care
Our Critical Care Department delivers consultant-led, 24/7 intensive care for the most critically ill and injured patients, including those recovering from major surgery or multi-organ failure. Led by experienced intensivists, multidisciplinary teams work closely with specialists across cardiology, anesthesiology, neurology, nephrology, surgery and transplant medicine to provide coordinated, evidence-based care. Advanced life-support systems, continuous monitoring, quick access to blood-related products, interventional radiology, and purpose-built ICUs with strict infection control ensure timely, precise and safe treatment.

Anesthesiology
Our Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine provides comprehensive anesthetic care across surgical and interventional procedures, supporting more than 1 lakh patients every year. With a multidisciplinary team of pediatric anesthesiologists, we deliver local, regional, sedation and general anesthesia tailored to individual needs. Advanced expertise includes cardiac, transplant, neuro, bariatric, & oncology, alongside ultrasound-guided regional techniques and complex airway management. In addition, our services also include interventional support, critical care, and acute and chronic pain management.

Dental
