About the Disease & Condition

A deviated nasal septum (DNS) occurs when the thin wall between the nostrils (septum) is displaced to one side, causing nasal obstruction. It can result from congenital factors or trauma and may lead to difficulty breathing, chronic sinus infections, snoring, or nosebleeds. Mild cases may be asymptomatic, while severe deviations can impact quality of life. Diagnosis is usually through physical examination and nasal endoscopy. Treatment ranges from medical management with decongestants to surgical correction via septoplasty.

Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils consistently.
Frequent nasal congestion or a blocked nose unresponsive to medications.
Snoring or disturbed sleep due to airflow obstruction.
Recurrent sinus infections or post-nasal drip causing discomfort.

Congenital structural abnormality of the nasal septum at birth.
Trauma or injury to the nose from accidents or sports.
Abnormal growth of nasal cartilage during childhood or adolescence.
Chronic nasal inflammation causing gradual septal deviation over time.

Use nasal decongestants or sprays for temporary symptom relief.
Manage allergies or sinus inflammation with medications as advised.
Avoid nasal trauma or activities that may worsen obstruction.
Consider septoplasty for persistent obstruction or recurrent sinus infections.
