Known Symptoms
- Sudden pain that often begins near the navel and shifts to the lower right abdomen
- Worsening abdominal pain with movement, coughing, or pressure
- Nausea and/or vomiting, often following the onset of pain
- Loss of appetite
- Fever or chills, sometimes with abdominal swelling
Note: If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, seek emergency care immediately. Come to the Emergency Department as soon as possible—drive yourself if you are able, have someone bring you, or call our ambulance service for immediate assistance.
Known Causes
- Blockage of the appendix opening by stool, infection, or foreign material
- Bacterial infection leading to inflammation and swelling
- Abdominal infections that spread to the appendix
- Age (most common in adolescents and young adults, but can occur at any age)
- Family history of appendicitis
Care
- Prompt surgical removal of the appendix (appendectomy), often performed laparoscopically
- Antibiotics before and/or after surgery to treat or prevent infection
- Pain control and supportive care during recovery
- Gradual return to eating and normal activities as advised by your care team
- Follow-up appointments to monitor healing and prevent complications
