Blood Sugar Measurement
About the Procedure
Blood sugar measurement is a common diagnostic procedure used to determine the level of glucose in the blood. It helps in diagnosing and monitoring diabetes and assessing the effectiveness of the treatment. The procedure is usually performed using a glucometer, which requires a small drop of capillary blood obtained from a fingertip. Blood sugar measurement is quick, minimally invasive, and can be done in hospitals or at home. Regular monitoring helps prevent complications related to abnormal glucose levels.
Care Before the Procedure
- Explain the procedure to the patient to ensure cooperation.
- Wash hands and prepare a clean lancet, glucometer, and test strip.
- Ensure the patient has followed fasting or postprandial instructions if required.
- Select a finger and clean the site with an alcohol swab.
Care During the Procedure
- Prick the fingertip gently with the lancet.
- Wipe away the first drop of blood and use the second drop for testing.
- Apply blood to the test strip correctly according to the glucometer instructions.
- Observe the reading on the glucometer carefully.
Care After the Procedure
- Apply gentle pressure to the puncture site to stop the bleeding.
- Dispose off the lancet and the used strip safely.
- Record the blood sugar level with time and date.
- Advise the patient about next testing or precautions if the level is abnormal.
