About the procedure
Dental trauma refers to injuries such as knocked-out (avulsed), fractured, or displaced teeth. Immediate care is critical to save the tooth, reduce pain, and prevent long-term complications.
Care before the procedure
- Restore avulsed or injured teeth.
- Reduce pain, bleeding, and risk of infection.
- Preserve tooth function and appearance.
Care during the procedure
Avulsed Tooth:
- Pick up the tooth by the crown, avoiding the root.
- Rinse gently with milk or saline if dirty; do not scrub.
- Place in milk, saline, or the patient’s saliva for safe transport.
- Reimplantation by a dentist as soon as possible (ideally within 30–60 minutes).
Other Dental Trauma:
- Assess tooth fracture, displacement, or soft tissue injuries.
- Stabilisation using splints if required.
- Pain management and treatment of associated soft tissue injuries.
Care after the procedure
- Maintain good oral hygiene; brush gently around the injured area
- Follow a soft diet for a few days
- Avoid touching or biting the treated tooth
- Follow-up visits to monitor healing, pulp vitality, and overall recovery
