Neuro-ophthalmic Evaluation / Headache and Visual Pathway Assessment
About the procedure
Neuro-ophthalmic evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of vision related to neurological disorders. It examines visual acuity, visual fields, pupil responses, optic nerve health, ocular motility, and cranial nerve function. The evaluation helps detect optic neuropathies, diplopia, visual loss, or neurological conditions affecting the visual pathways. Techniques include detailed patient history, slit-lamp and dilated fundus examination, visual field testing, OCT of the retinal nerve fiber layer, and neuroimaging such as MRI. Electrophysiology may be used in select cases to guide diagnosis and management.
Care before the procedure
- Avoid eye makeup or contact lenses on the day of evaluation.
- Bring previous eye or neuroimaging reports if available.
- Inform the doctor about medications and systemic health conditions.
- Note any recent episodes of vision changes or headaches.
Care during the procedure
- Follow instructions during visual field and ocular motility testing.
- Keep eyes open and steady during slit-lamp and fundus exams.
- Notify the examiner if experiencing discomfort or sudden vision changes.
- Remain still during OCT or electrophysiology measurements for accurate results.
Care after the procedure
- Mild eye fatigue or light sensitivity may occur post-exam.
- Follow recommendations or treatment plan based on findings.
- Schedule follow-ups or neuroimaging if advised by the specialist.
- Seek urgent review if vision worsens or new neurological symptoms appear.
Eligibility
- Patients with unexplained visual loss or optic nerve abnormalities needing evaluation.
- Individuals experiencing diplopia, persistent headaches, or transient visual obscurations.
- People suspected of intracranial pathology affecting vision or cranial nerves.
- Patients requiring monitoring of progressive neuro-ophthalmic conditions or treatment response.
