Care During the Procedure
- Screening for metabolic disorders (e.g., phenylketonuria, congenital hypothyroidism)
- Detection of endocrine disorders
- Identification of hemoglobinopathies (e.g., sickle cell disease)
- Early detection of rare genetic or functional conditions
Care After the Procedure
- Slight discomfort or bruising at the heel is normal; procedure is quick and generally painless
- Keep the puncture site clean and dry
- Monitor the baby for mild tenderness
