Nitrates
About the Procedure
Nitrates are medications used to relieve and prevent chest pain (angina) by relaxing and widening blood vessels. This improves blood flow to the heart muscle and reduces the heart’s workload and oxygen demand. They act quickly to relieve acute angina and are also used in long-acting forms for prevention. Nitrates are commonly prescribed in coronary artery disease, heart failure, and acute cardiac care. Proper timing and dosing are important to maintain effectiveness and avoid tolerance.
Care Before Medication
- Inform doctor about low blood pressure or recent medications.
- Avoid use with certain erectile dysfunction drugs.
- Review medical history and allergies.
- Understand correct usage for acute chest pain.
Care During Medication
- Take exactly as prescribed (sublingual, oral, or patch).
- Sit or lie down to prevent dizziness.
- Monitor headache, flushing, or lightheadedness.
- Follow dosing intervals to prevent drug tolerance.
Care After Medication
- Continue follow-up for symptom control assessment.
- Maintain nitrate-free intervals if using long-acting forms.
- Report persistent chest pain immediately.
- Combine with lifestyle changes and other cardiac therapies.
Eligibility
- Patients with stable or unstable angina.
