About the Procedure
A sleep study, or polysomnography, is a test that monitors your sleep patterns to diagnose sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, or narcolepsy. During the study, various body functions—such as brain activity, eye movements, heart rate, breathing, oxygen levels, and limb movements—are recorded overnight.
Care before the procedure
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and heavy meals before bedtime.
- Follow your usual sleep schedule if possible.
- Bring comfortable clothing and personal items for overnight stay.
- Continue medications unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
- Do not sleep in the afternoon on the day of the procedure

- You sleep overnight in a sleep lab or monitored setting.
- Technicians observe and record your sleep patterns throughout the night.
- The test is non-invasive and generally safe.
