About the procedure
De Quervain’s release is a surgical procedure that relieves stenosing tenosynovitis affecting the thumb tendons by releasing the first dorsal wrist compartment. It is indicated when conservative treatments such as splints or steroid injections fail to improve persistent radial wrist pain, swelling, or limitation of thumb movement. During surgery, a small incision is made over the radial styloid, and the tendon sheath is carefully released while protecting the superficial radial nerve branches. Postoperative care includes brief splinting, gradual thumb and wrist exercises, and return to normal activities within weeks.
