About the Speciality

The Urology Department at KIMSHEALTH provides comprehensive care for disorders of the urinary tract and male reproductive system under the leadership of Dr Renu Thomas, combining advanced technology with surgical expertise. We specialise in minimally invasive approaches-ECIRS for complex kidney stones, HoLEP for prostate enlargement, and advanced laparoscopic procedures to reduce recovery time. We have performed over 600 kidney transplants, including paediatric, cadaveric, multiorgan and ABO-incompatible cases, and manage dialysis access and post-transplant care. Our services also cover urogynecology, reconstructive urology, uro-oncology, men’s health, paediatric urology and dedicated clinics for stones and prostate disease. With on-site diagnostics (urodynamics, cystoscopy, CT, 3T MRI, ultrasound and nuclear scans), 24/7 emergency urology, a multidisciplinary tumour board, rehabilitation and pharmacy support, we deliver coordinated, patient-centred care at every stage.

Varicocele

Varicocele is the abnormal enlargement of veins within the scrotum, similar to varicose veins in the legs. It commonly occurs on the left side and can affect sperm production and quality, potentially contributing to male infertility. Many cases are asymptomatic, but some may cause discomfort, swelling, or testicular atrophy. Early diagnosis through physical examination and imaging helps guide management. Treatments include lifestyle modifications, medications for pain relief, or surgical procedures to correct the abnormal veins.

Urinary Obstruction

Urinary obstruction occurs when the flow of urine is blocked at any point in the urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra. Causes include kidney stones, enlarged prostate, tumours, or strictures. This blockage can lead to pain, urinary retention, infections, or kidney damage if untreated. Early diagnosis through imaging and urine tests, along with proper management via medications, minimally invasive procedures, or surgery, is essential to relieve obstruction, restore normal urine flow, and protect kidney function.

Urinary Urgency and Frequency

Urinary urgency is the sudden, strong need to urinate immediately, while urinary frequency is the need to urinate more often than usual. These symptoms often indicate underlying conditions such as urinary tract infections, overactive bladder, bladder stones, or prostate issues in men. Early evaluation helps identify the cause and prevent complications like infections or kidney problems. Diagnosis may involve urine tests, imaging, or bladder studies, and management includes medications, lifestyle modifications, and treatment of the underlying condition.

Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Recurrent UTIs are repeated infections of the urinary tract, including the bladder, urethra, or kidneys, typically occurring two or more times within six months. They are more common in women but can affect men as well. Causes include bacterial infections, structural abnormalities, incomplete bladder emptying, or weakened immunity. Early diagnosis and proper management through antibiotics, lifestyle changes, and preventive measures help reduce recurrence, relieve symptoms, and protect kidney function.

Wound or Suture Removal

Wound or suture removal is the process of taking out stitches after a wound, surgical incision, or injury has healed sufficiently. The procedure helps prevent infection, promote proper healing, and improve the cosmetic appearance of the scar. It is quick, simple, and usually painless.

Uroflowmetry

Uroflowmetry is a non-invasive test that measures the speed and volume of urine flow during urination. It helps assess bladder function, detect obstruction in the urinary tract, and evaluate conditions like enlarged prostate, urethral strictures, or weak bladder muscles. The test is simple, painless, and usually takes a few minutes.

Urine Cytology & Urinalysis

Urine Cytology examines urine cells under a microscope to detect cancerous or abnormal cells in the urinary tract. Urinalysis is a general urine test that evaluates chemical, physical, and microscopic properties to detect infections, kidney disease, diabetes, or other urinary disorders. Both tests are non-invasive, simple, and provide important information for diagnosis and monitoring.

Ureteroscopy & Laser Stone Removal

Ureteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure in which a thin scope (ureteroscope) is inserted through the urethra and bladder into the ureter to diagnose or treat urinary tract stones or strictures. Laser stone removal involves using a laser through the ureteroscope to break kidney or ureter stones into smaller fragments, which are then naturally passed or removed. This procedure relieves pain, restores urine flow, and prevents complications.
