An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail edge grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, inflammation, and possible infection. It most commonly affects the great toe and can recur if not properly managed.
Known Symptoms
- Localized pain, redness, and swelling around the nail edge.
- Pus discharge or formation of granulation tissue.
- Discomfort increases when wearing tight shoes or walking.
- Recurrent infection may develop in chronic cases.

- Tight-fitting shoes causing pressure on the nail margins.
- Incorrect nail trimming, cutting edges too rounded.
- Trauma or repeated injury to the toenail.

Care
- Trim nails straight across and wear roomy footwear.
- Soak the affected toe to reduce inflammation and pain.
- Topical antibiotics for superficial infections when present.
- Partial or complete nail removal is recommended for recurrent or severe cases.
