Retinal Vein Occlusion
About the disease & condition
Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is the blockage of a retinal vein, leading to reduced blood flow and vision loss. It is the second most common retinal vascular disorder after diabetic retinopathy. Risk factors include hypertension, diabetes, glaucoma, and clotting disorders. Symptoms may present as sudden, painless vision loss, blurred vision, or dark/distorted areas in the visual field. Diagnosis involves fundus examination, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and fluorescein angiography. Management focuses on controlling systemic risk factors, regular retinal monitoring, and intravitreal injections for macular oedema.
Know symptoms
- Sudden painless vision loss or blurring.
- Distorted or dark areas in central vision.
- Difficulty seeing fine details or reading.
- Fluctuating vision depending on retinal involvement.
Know causes
- Hypertension and poorly controlled diabetes mellitus.
- Glaucoma causing increased retinal venous pressure.
- Clotting disorders or hypercoagulable states.
- Age-related vascular changes in retinal veins.
Care
- Control blood pressure, blood sugar, and systemic conditions.
- Regular retinal check-ups to monitor disease progression.
- Intravitreal injections to manage macular oedema if present.
- Prompt evaluation for any sudden changes in vision.
