Testicular Torsion
About the disease & condition
Testicular torsion is a urological emergency where the spermatic cord twists, cutting off blood supply to the testis. Most common in adolescents, it can occur at any age and requires urgent intervention to prevent testicular loss.
Know symptoms
- Sudden, severe pain in one testicle or scrotum.
- Swelling, redness, and tenderness of affected scrotum.
- Nausea and vomiting accompanying acute testicular pain.
- Testis may appear high-riding or lie transversely.
Know causes
- Congenital “bell clapper” deformity of the testis.
- Trauma or injury to the scrotal area.
- Vigorous physical activity triggering torsion.
- Sometimes occurs spontaneously without clear trigger.
Care
- Immediate urology referral for urgent assessment and surgery.
- Emergency scrotal exploration is performed with detorsion and fixation (orchidopexy).
- Early intervention within hours preserves testicular viability.
- Avoid delays; prompt action reduces infertility risk.
