Cystoscopy & TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate)
About the procedure
Cystoscopy is a procedure where a thin tube with a camera (cystoscope) is inserted through the urethra to examine the bladder and urinary tract, detect abnormalities, or take biopsies. TURP is a surgical procedure to remove part of the prostate gland via the urethra, usually to relieve urinary obstruction caused by an enlarged prostate (BPH).
Care before the procedure
- Inform your doctor about medications, allergies, or bleeding disorders.
- Fasting may be required if anaesthesia is planned.
- Urine tests or imaging may be done before the procedure.
- Consent must be obtained, and pre-procedure instructions followed.
Care during the procedure
- Local, spinal, or general anaesthesia is administered as appropriate.
- A cystoscope or resectoscope is inserted through the urethra to examine or remove tissue.
- Continuous monitoring of vital signs is done.
- TURP involves removal of excess prostate tissue to relieve obstruction.
Care after the procedure
- Urinary catheter may be placed temporarily after TURP.
- Monitor urine output, bleeding, and signs of infection.
- Drink plenty of fluids unless otherwise advised.
- Avoid strenuous activity and sexual activity until cleared by your doctor.
- Follow-up visits to monitor healing and urinary function.

- An enlarged prostate (BPH) causes a weak stream or incomplete emptying.
