Surfactant Therapy
About the Procedure
Surfactant therapy is a specialized treatment given to premature newborns whose lungs are not fully developed. Surfactant is a natural substance that helps keep the air sacs in the lungs open, making breathing easier. In premature infants with Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS), artificial surfactant is administered directly into the lungs to improve oxygen exchange and reduce breathing effort. This treatment significantly improves survival rates and supports smoother respiratory transition in the early days of life.
Care Before the Procedure
- Assessment of respiratory distress
- Chest X-ray confirmation (if needed)
- Oxygen and blood gas evaluation
- Parental counseling
Care During the Procedure
- Administration through breathing tube
- Continuous oxygen monitoring
- Ventilator adjustment if required
- Observation for immediate response
Care After the Procedure
- Ongoing respiratory monitoring
- Gradual reduction of oxygen support
- Follow-up imaging if needed
- Monitoring for complications
Eligibility
- Premature infants
- Babies with Respiratory Distress Syndrome
- Newborns requiring ventilator support
