Testicular Exams
About the procedure
A testicular exam is a physical check of the testicles and scrotum to detect lumps, swelling, or other abnormalities. It helps in the early detection of conditions like testicular cancer, infections, or varicoceles. Exams can be performed by a doctor or self-examined at home.
Care before the procedure
- No special preparation is usually required.
- Wash your hands and genital area before a self-exam.
- Be in a comfortable, private environment with good lighting.
Care during the procedure
- Doctor’s exam: Patient lies down or stands; the doctor inspects and palpates each testicle and the surrounding area.
- Self-exam: Roll each testicle gently between the fingers to feel for lumps or irregularities.
- Check the epididymis and spermatic cord for abnormalities.
Care after the procedure
- Report any unusual lumps, swelling, or pain to a doctor promptly.
- Maintain regular monthly self-exams for early detection.
- Follow up with a urologist if any abnormal findings are detected.
- Stay aware of changes in size, texture, or tenderness over time.
Eligibility
- All males, especially teenagers and adults aged 15–50, at regular intervals.
- Individuals with pain, swelling, or lumps in the testicles.
- Patients with history of undescended testicles or previous testicular issues.
- Those with family history of testicular cancer.
