Ultrasound & Fetal Monitoring
About the procedure
Ultrasound uses 2D sound waves to visualize the fetus, monitor fetal development, and In early pregnancy Ultrasound is essential to confirm pregnancy either single or multiple pregnancy, and determine gestational age. The 1st level 1 ultrasound is called nuchal translucency ( NT ) scan for all pregnant women to reassure the first trimester of pregnancy. It helps determine a fetus' risk of congenital conditions like Down syndrome. It's highly accurate when combined with other scans. The 2nd trimester is the most important ultrasound to detect anomalies called level 2 ultrasound, to reassure all fetal organ development and further assess amniotic fluid, and monitor placental location. In advance, the gestational age of pregnancy needs to do fetal Doppler with growth scan and fetal well-being and if required need to do 4D ultrasound. The procedure is safe, non-invasive, and provides vital information for prenatal care planning, ensuring both maternal and fetal safety throughout gestation.
Care before the procedure
- Wear loose clothing to allow abdominal access.
- Drink water before abdominal ultrasound unless instructed .
- Bring previous scans and medical reports for comparison.
- Inform the consult doctor of any current medications or complications or any previous scan report that shows any abnormalities.
Care during the procedure
- Lie still as instructed for accurate imaging and monitoring.
- Follow the breathing or positioning directions for optimal visualization.
- Communicate any discomfort during the procedure to the staff.
- Remain relaxed to ensure clear fetal images.
Care after the procedure
- Resume normal activities immediately after the scan.
- Review results with the obstetrician for next steps.
- Schedule follow-up scans as recommended based on gestational progress.
- Monitor for any unusual symptoms and report promptly.
Eligibility
- All pregnant women require periodic ultrasounds for fetal growth and development assessment.
- High-risk pregnancies need more frequent imaging to monitor complications.
- Women with abnormal findings, or suspected anomalies require detailed scans.
- Ultrasound is essential for evaluating the placenta, amniotic fluid, and multiple pregnancies.
