About the Speciality

In our Department of Ophthalmology, we provide comprehensive eye care for all ages, ranging from routine vision checks to complex surgery. Our ophthalmologists diagnose and treat cataracts, glaucoma, corneal disease (including transplants), retinal disorders, paediatric eye problems, and eye injuries or infections. In addition to advanced diagnostics, such as slit-lamp exams, OCT, perimetry, and imaging, we offer proven treatments such as phacoemulsification, ICLs, retinal and glaucoma surgery, as well as oculoplastic and lacrimal procedures. Care is coordinated with other specialties for safe peri-operative support and rehabilitation, and our clinics and theatres are equipped for day-case and inpatient procedures.

Retinal Vein Occlusion

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is the blockage of a retinal vein, leading to reduced blood flow and vision loss. It is the second most common retinal vascular disorder after diabetic retinopathy. Risk factors include hypertension, diabetes, glaucoma, and clotting disorders. Symptoms may present as sudden, painless vision loss, blurred vision, or dark/distorted areas in the visual field. Diagnosis involves fundus examination, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and fluorescein angiography. Management focuses on controlling systemic risk factors, regular retinal monitoring, and intravitreal injections for macular oedema.

Squint / Lazy Eye (Amblyopia & Strabismus)

Squint (strabismus) is the misalignment of the eyes, while amblyopia, or lazy eye, is reduced vision in one eye. Both conditions are common in childhood, and early detection is crucial to prevent long-term visual impairment. Causes include refractive errors, ocular muscle imbalance, family history, and premature birth. Symptoms include visibly misaligned eyes, poor depth perception, or head tilting. Diagnosis involves visual acuity testing, cover-uncover tests, and prism assessments. Management includes early screening, corrective lenses, patching therapy, and surgery if needed.

Stye (Hordeolum)

A stye, or hordeolum, is an acute infection of an eyelid gland, typically caused by Staphylococcus aureus, leading to a red, painful lump near the eyelash line. Risk factors include poor eyelid hygiene and chronic blepharitis. Symptoms include localised swelling, tenderness, redness, tearing, and sometimes pus formation. Diagnosis is clinical, based on eyelid examination. Management involves warm compresses to promote drainage, maintaining eyelid hygiene, and topical antibiotic ointments if infection is present. Untreated cases may form abscesses or chronic chalazia.

Uveitis and Chronic Eye Inflammation

Uveitis is inflammation of the uveal tract, which includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. It may be associated with systemic autoimmune conditions or infections. Causes include autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, infections such as tuberculosis, herpes, or syphilis, trauma, or idiopathic origins. Symptoms include eye pain, redness, photophobia, blurred vision, and floaters. Diagnosis involves slit-lamp examination, blood tests, and imaging for underlying causes. Early treatment and regular ophthalmic follow-up prevent complications like glaucoma, cataract, retinal damage, and vision loss.

Visual Field Testing / Visual Field Assessment

Visual field testing maps the central and peripheral vision using automated perimetry or manual techniques. It helps detect and monitor conditions affecting the visual pathways, including glaucoma, optic nerve disease, neurological lesions, and retinal disorders. Standard automated perimetry (e.g., Humphrey), Goldmann manual perimetry, or quick confrontation tests may be used based on clinical needs. Results are correlated with optic nerve imaging, OCT, and comprehensive eye examination. The procedure is non-invasive, requires patient cooperation, and has no recovery time, although repeat testing may be needed to monitor progression or confirm reliability.

Slit Lamp Examination

A slit lamp examination provides a high-magnification, stereoscopic view of the eye’s anterior structures, including the lids, conjunctiva, cornea, anterior chamber, and lens, and with additional lenses, the posterior segment. It is a fundamental diagnostic tool for nearly all ocular complaints. The procedure allows detailed assessment of ocular health and can be combined with fluorescein staining, applanation tonometry, gonioscopy, or fundus examination to aid diagnosis. It is safe, non-invasive, and typically requires no recovery time, though temporary light sensitivity may occur if pupil-dilating drops are used.

Refraction / Vision Test

Refraction is the measurement of refractive errors, including myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, to determine the appropriate corrective lenses. The assessment combines objective techniques like autorefractor or retinoscopy with subjective refinement using a phoropter. Visual acuity charts are used to evaluate clarity of vision. Refraction is essential for prescribing glasses or contact lenses, monitoring changes in vision, and maintaining routine eye care. The procedure is non-invasive, quick, and forms the foundation for comprehensive ophthalmic evaluations. No recovery is required; patients leave with prescriptions and guidance for corrective options.

Neuro-Ophthalmic Evaluation / Headache and Visual Pathway Assessment

Neuro-ophthalmic evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of vision related to neurological disorders. It examines visual acuity, visual fields, pupil responses, optic nerve health, ocular motility, and cranial nerve function. The evaluation helps detect optic neuropathies, diplopia, visual loss, or neurological conditions affecting the visual pathways. Techniques include detailed patient history, slit-lamp and dilated fundus examination, visual field testing, OCT of the retinal nerve fiber layer, and neuroimaging such as MRI. Electrophysiology may be used in select cases to guide diagnosis and management.
