Pleural Diseases (Pleural Effusion, Pneumothorax, Empyema)
About the disease & condition
Pleural diseases affect the pleura, the thin membrane surrounding the lungs. Common conditions include pleural effusion (fluid buildup), pneumothorax (air in the pleural space), and empyema (pus accumulation). These disorders can cause breathing difficulty, chest pain, and reduced lung function. Causes include infections, lung injury, heart failure, or underlying lung disease. Early diagnosis through imaging and proper management with medications, drainage procedures, or surgery is essential to relieve symptoms, restore lung function, and prevent serious complications.
Known Symptoms
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing during activity.
- Sharp or stabbing chest pain that worsens with breathing.
- Cough that may be persistent or productive.
- Fever or malaise in cases with infection (empyema).
Known Causes
- Lung infections like pneumonia causing fluid or pus buildup.
- Chest trauma or injury leading to air in the pleural space.
- Heart failure/ kidney failure causing fluid accumulation around the lungs.
- Underlying lung diseases, such as cancer or chronic conditions.
Care
- Follow prescribed medications, including antibiotics or pain relievers.
- Undergo drainage procedures if fluid, pus, or air accumulates.
- Monitor symptoms and attend regular medical follow-ups.
- Seek urgent care for sudden worsening breathlessness or chest pain.
