About the disease & condition

Acute appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, a small pouch attached to the large intestine. It is one of the most common surgical emergencies causing acute abdominal pain. The condition usually develops suddenly due to blockage within the appendix, leading to infection and swelling. Without timely treatment, the appendix can rupture, causing serious complications. Early recognition of symptoms and urgent medical or surgical management are crucial to prevent perforation, infection, and life-threatening outcomes.

Know symptoms

Pain starting near the navel, migrating to the right lower abdomen.
Loss of appetite with nausea and occasional vomiting.
Low-grade fever with pain worsening on movement.

Know causes

Obstruction of the appendix by faecolith or lymphoid tissue.
Bacterial infection following blockage and inflammation.
Condition is more common in adolescents and young adults.

Care

Urgent surgical evaluation for suspected acute appendicitis.
Appendectomy is the definitive treatment in most cases.
Early antibiotics and monitoring in selected uncomplicated cases.
