About the disease & condition

A hordeolum, commonly called a chalazion, is a painless lump or swelling on the eyelid caused by blockage of the meibomian (oil) gland. It is often chronic and may develop following a stye. Risk factors include poor eyelid hygiene, inflammation, skin conditions such as rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis, and recurrent blepharitis. Symptoms include a firm, painless swelling, mild redness or tenderness, and occasionally blurred vision if the lump presses on the cornea. Management involves warm compresses, eyelid hygiene, and medical or surgical drainage if persistent.

Known Causes

Blockage of meibomian oil glands due to inflammation.

Previous stye or recurrent eyelid infections.

Care

Apply warm compresses and gently massage the eyelid daily.
Maintain proper eyelid hygiene to prevent recurrence.
Seek medical or surgical drainage if swelling persists.
Avoid squeezing or rubbing the lesion to prevent infection.
